So I have got some information about the Magic Babies bootleg. This is not everything I got, but I want to empty some things that are on my mind. The English Magic Babies are probably the most famous from this post on Imgur by user 1FatJesus1 from March 25th, 2013 and the meme-status created from that.
English 'dub'
So here are some things I found out about the English translation:
Chinese 'original'
Here are some things I found out about the Chinese original:
Images and (incomplete) set list I'll make and share on a later moment. I'll also got some sources to share, but I'll need to compile them too, so they come at a later moment too.
Maybe it's a good idea to make an online Excel spreadsheet where we can make a database with images, so that way we can compile a lot of information. I don't exactly know how, but it's an idea.
English 'dub'
So here are some things I found out about the English translation:
- The English version in based on the Chinese original.
- I've got some boxes with the name 'Pokémon Little Spirit', leading me to believe that this is the 'official name'.
- I suspect that there are multiple 'releases', like different boxes. The boxes I have, are distinctively different then two other sources I've found. Since every box has 1 source
- There is no set list, but the cards do have numbers and symbols. Some number appear twice, while some don't even appear once. So I suspect that these cards are based on Chinese sets, but not the complete set.
- All cards have a holo pattern
- There are some energy cards in circulation, but these are based on the Wizards of the Coast design.
- No trainers found as of now.
- I'm working on a set list. I thought I had all of the cards, but while i was re-checking my sources I found a handfull of cards which I don't have.
- There are more English cards based on the Chinese version, but these have different designs.
- The boxes I have confirm that they origin from China, because the bottom of the box says 'Made in China'.
- The release date (1) has to be after the (Japanese) release of Gen III, since there are Pokémon from this generation present.
- The seller from which I bought the boxes said that, he worked at a comic shop from 2001 to 2007 and that on that moment he got the cards. The release date (2) has to be in between 2001 and 2007.
Chinese 'original'
Here are some things I found out about the Chinese original:
- There are multiple Chinese bootleg cards. First I thought that one of the was the spiritual successor of these cards, but looking at the years under the cards lead me to believe both sets exist separatly.
- There are newer releases that the one used for the English dubs. This is confirmed by the fact that newer Pokemon are present, as well as the years underneath the cards.
- There are some Chinese originals found, thanks to fellow collector Galen I've got Magneton, Gengar, and Omastar in my collection.
- I've found images of the following cards too: Dragonite, Charizard, Metapod, Ditto, and Beautifly
- By looking at the existing cards, we could verify a year release of the English dub
- Since there seems to be 'yearly' (at least multiple) releases the best way to order then is sorting them on 'year of card'
- There is a Crystal Version of the Chinese original, potentially a separate set, but not sure
Images and (incomplete) set list I'll make and share on a later moment. I'll also got some sources to share, but I'll need to compile them too, so they come at a later moment too.
